Rare Bears is an organization that recruits volunteers to make stuffed bears that go to children with rare diseases. These children often are overlooked by the large charities due to the fact that their illnesses are so little publicized compared to cancer and other more commonly heard of illnesses. The child's interests are matched up to each unique bear and delivered across the country.

Betty provides the Simplicity pattern C5461 and (through the Rare Bear organization) special foot bottoms and a serial number tag which must be used. Each bear has a sewn in serial number and unique Rare Bear feet. We have completed and donated almost 40 Rare Bears.

Construction of a bear is done with scraps from quilting. You can also use fabric yardage of your choice. This is a great use of our scraps to bring smiles to precious children. Experience in garment construction is helpful. The bears are best to remain unstuffed and faceless as their shipping is easier to accommodate. 

The bears are stuffed by the organization before they are matched with a client.
